The cast of “Deli Boys” had plenty to celebrate when they hit the blue carpet at the 41st Film Independent Spirit Awards. Asif Ali was nominated for Best Breakthrough Performance in a New Scripted Series and Poorna Jagannathan was a nominee in the Best Supporting Performance category. That was reason enough for co-star Saagar Shaikh to join his friends at the show, and all three joined IndieWire and Lavazza for a Coffee Break before the ceremony.
“Deli Boys” was recently renewed by Hulu for Season 2, and Ali explained how the excitement about filming a second season differs from the excitement of filming a pilot.
“I think the first time we were kind of anticipating what it’s gonna be, that kind of excitement,” Ali said. “And then the second time it’s like ‘Man, I can’t wait to be back.’ To see all my friends again and go back into this world that we love so much.”
Shaikh added that most of the cast had never met before Season 1 began filming, so the nerves about meeting new people were replaced by the promise of reconnecting with friends when it was time to shoot Season 2.
“Our first day on set, when we started the pilot, we didn’t even know each other,” Shaikh said. “We met the first day!”
Jagannathan added that while she was working on multiple projects while Season 2 was in production, but her heart was always on the “Deli Boys” set.
“On Season 2 I was on a couple of different sets, and all I could think about was ‘When can I go home? When can I go home? When can I go home?’” she said. “Because my home is the set of ‘Deli Boys.’”
