La Palma in the Canary Islands and Figueira Da Foz in Portugal have been named the best filming locations in Europe. The European Film Commissions Network runs the Location Awards and the winners of its ninth edition were announced at an event during the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival.
The Canary Islands, an autonomous region of Spain, earned recognition for La Palma, which was nominated as a filming location after Netflix thriller series La Palma shot there.
Each film commission that is an EUFCN member can submit one location from their territory and La Palma won the overall EUFCN Location Award 2025. The winner was selected by the Location Awards Jury, which included Alessandro Bonino from Fremantle’s Wildside, Gail McQuillan from Blueprint Pictures, Caroline von Kühn from Oxbelly, and location managers Andrea Keener and Sue Quinn.
It is the second time the Canary Islands have been recognized with the Location Award, with El Hierro honored in 2019. Natacha Mora, Coordinator at Canary Islands Film, Lorena Martín, Project Manager at Canary Islands Film, and Beatriz Páez, Island Director of Tourism of the Island Council of La Palma, accepted the latest award.
Figueira da Foz, meanwhile, was nominated after serving as a location shoot on the drama series Broken Spies. It scooped the EUFCN Audience Location Award, which is selected by the public through an online vote.
“Winning this award shows that Portugal, and particularly Figueira da Foz, offers the right conditions and outstanding locations for major international audiovisual productions. Let Portugal be the setting for your next project,” said Ana Marques, Executive Director of the Portugal Film Commission
