It’s been a long time since we’ve heard from Gun Outfit. The culty LA-via-Olympia duo released Out Of Range, their most recently album, way back in 2017. In 2021, they appeared alongside Eleanor Friedberger and Chloë Sevigny in the movie Slow Machine. Today, Gun Outfit announce that they’re coming back with a new 80-minute double album that they actually recorded years ago.
The forthcoming Gun Outfit album Process & Reality, named after and inspired by the work of philosopher, Alfred North Whitehead, was recorded in a California ranch during the 2020 wildfire season. On this LP, longtime band members Dylan Sharp and Carrie Keith are joined by drummer Daniel Swire, multi-instrumentalist Henry Barnes, and bassist Kayla Cohen. Chris Cohen, Warren Le, and Danny Sasaki also contributed. In a press release, Sharp says, “I hope it provides listeners at least somewhat relaxing and hopeful. We are in the midst of an insane strategy of tension situation in the US and this is just an invitation to fade in and out and remember your friends and not get too stressed out all the time, even it appears we are hurtling over edge into absolute cynicism and depravity.”
Process & Reality includes “Teardrops (Classic Hell On Earth),” a song that the band debuted in a 2019 performance at the Getty Museum. It’s also got the new single “Unfelt Loss.” That song opens the album, and it’s a warm, psychedelic campfire tune with a video from director Joe DeNardo.
