Harry Styles Makes Surprise ‘SNL’ Appearance Ahead of Hosting Return

Harry Styles made an unexpected appearance on Saturday Night Live a week before his scheduled return as host and musical guest.

The pop star briefly showed up during Ryan Gosling’s opening monologue on the March 7 episode of NBC’s long-running sketch show, sending the studio audience into a frenzy when cameras revealed him sitting in the crowd.

Gosling quickly incorporated the moment into the bit, jokingly panicking that Styles’ presence was distracting the audience from his monologue plans.

“Is that Harry Styles?” Gosling asked after noticing the singer in the crowd. When the camera cut to Styles, the audience erupted into cheers as the former One Direction member casually waved from his seat.

When Gosling asked why he was there, Styles explained he had simply stopped by to watch ahead of his own hosting gig the following week.

“Well, I’m hosting next week, and it’s been a while,” Styles said during the segment. “So I just wanted to watch and get a feel for it.”

The sketch leaned into the idea that Styles’ effortless cool was overshadowing Gosling’s monologue. At one point, the host joked that Styles’ presence was throwing him off track as he tried to introduce a musical number tied to his upcoming sci-fi film Project Hail Mary.

“Your coolness is becoming a bit of an issue,” Gosling told the singer as the camera repeatedly cut back to him in the audience.

The gag escalated as the show displayed a split-screen of the two stars, with Gosling pleading for the camera to stop cutting to Styles. It was eventually revealed that the crew member operating the camera was a devoted Styles fan.

Gosling ultimately attempted to wrap up the bit with a musical flourish, briefly referencing his viral performance of “I’m Just Ken” from the film Barbie at the 2024 Academy Awards, while Styles remained seated among the crowd.

The cameo arrives ahead of Styles’ official return to the SNL stage on March 14, when he will serve as both host and musical guest.

The appearance comes as the singer continues promoting his latest album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. Released Friday (March 6), the singer’s fourth studio album features Billboard Hot 100-topping lead single “Aperture,” as well as “American Girls” — which got its own music video the day of the album’s release, featuring Styles as an action movie star.

Styles last hosted SNL while also serving as musical guest in 2019. You can watch Harry Styles’ surprise cameo below.
