“Hillel had the key that made Flea & Anthony sound the best they could be.” Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a documentary film titled The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel, a music history rock doc streaming later this month. The film is premiering at the 2026 SXSW Film Festival this month in their music doc section before it hits Netflix to watch. An in-depth look at the formative years of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the profound influence of original guitarist, Hillel Slovak. The film explores the band’s early evolution in LA and the deep bonds forged through their friendship. Focusing on the gritty, formative years of the Los Angeles band, and the influence of original guitarist Hillel Slovak, who died in 1988. It features interviews with bandmates Flea and Anthony Kiedis who discuss the band’s early evolution. RHCP formed as a rock band in 1982 and launched their first debut album in 1984. This doc film features interviews with bandmates Flea and Anthony Kiedis and others close to Slovak, the film explores the band’s early evolution on the LA music scene and deep bond of their childhood friendship. As the original guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hillel Slovak was instrumental in creating the band’s unique funk rock sound. Rise of the RHCP: Our Brother, Hillel, is an in-depth look at the group’s formative years in L.A. in the late ’70s and early ’80s when Slovak, bassist Flea and frontman Anthony Kiedis were a found family of misfits pouring their creative energy into music that would eventually garner multi platinum success and gain them induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Director Ben Feldman gets inside the group’s origin story and Slovak’s unique place in it, including contributions to the seminal Chili Pepper albums Freaky Styley & The Uplift Mofo Party Plan and their earliest tour experiences. Featuring interviews with Flea, Kiedis and others close to Slovak — including former Chili Pepper and Pearl Jam drummer Jack Irons, Alain Johannes of Eleven, and funk legend George Clinton— the film explores the dark and light of the L.A. music scene and the deep bond of their childhood friendship.

The Rise of the Red Hot Chili Peppers: Our Brother, Hillel is a music doc film directed by filmmaker Ben Feldman, making his first feature film after directing on the series “Bug Out” and “Rich & Shameless” previously. Produced by Marc D’Agostino. Executive produced by Dan Braun, Josh Braun, David Blackman, James Slovak, Ben Feldman. This is premiering at the 2026 SXSW Film Festival in the 24 Beats Per Second section coming up this month.
