Last night, St. Vincent played the 280-cap venue Little Saint in Healdsburg, California with her keyboardist Rachel Eckroth. Her setlist included a bunch of covers, including a solo take on Jeff Buckley’s 1994 track “Grace.”
The late singer-songwriter was the subject of the documentary It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley last year, and his music has been experiencing a TikTok-fueled revival. This year Buckley landed his first Hot 100 hit with “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over” (also from Grace, his sole studio album) and his first Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame nomination. Most artists tackle other Jeff Buckley songs, although shoutout Violet Grohl for singing the title track at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert in London a few years ago. St. Vincent debuted her cover at a surprise set at Los Angeles’ Largo last week but no videos are allowed there. Grace drummer Matt Johnson, incidentally, was part of Annie Clark’s touring band in the ’10s.
Last fall St. Vincent played a few small rooms like Little Saint — including three at NYC’s Cafe Carlyle — but soon she’ll be back playing various festivals in North America throughout the spring and summer. Then she’s got two special orchestral shows in San Diego (Aug. 1) and Los Angeles (Aug. 2).
