“This extraordinary return to the origins of cinema also shows that the journey never stopped and the adventure continues. Cinema began here the same as we will always know it.” Janus Films has unveiled an official trailer for a mesmerizing new documentary film creation called Lumière, Le Cinéma, also known as Lumière: The Adventure Continues in French. Directed & narrated by Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Frémaux, who also works at the Institute Lumière in Lyon when not running Cannes. Frémaux follows up his 2016 collection of Lumière Brother films with another set of rare, restored prints. A sequel to his 2016 doc which also featured a collection of restored prints from the Lumière Brothers – the famous French brothers who were some of the most important originators of modern narrative cinema as we know it. This looks like an enchanting, exceptionally fascinating journey into the past. A chance to watch some of the oldest films ever shot, updated & restored for modern times, looking better than ever. Similar to Saved from the Flames in the US. Take a look and catch this rare footage on the big screen if you have the chance.

In one of those wonderful coincidences of history, lumière, the French word for “light,” was also the last name of brothers Auguste & Louis, whose brilliant invention, the cinematograph, helped inaugurate the most beloved art form of the last 130 years. Institute Lumière director Thierry Frémaux uses Lumière, Le Cinema! to guide the viewer through over a hundred shorts—some famous, some forgotten, some never before seen—directed by Lumière and company. In the process, Frémaux illuminates how the brothers employed the camera as a creative instrument as they (and their operators) mastered framing, staging, and subject selection for quotidian and exotic microdocumentaries as well as the first ever fictional motion pictures. The result is not only a glorious re(telling) of the genesis of cinema but a profound meditation on the beautiful world captured—and the mysterious world imagined—by the Lumières. Lumière, Le Cinéma!, also known as Lumière, l’aventure continue (or Lumière – The Adventure Continues in French), is directed by acclaimed French festival director Thierry Frémaux, directing his second film after also making the Lumière! doc in 2016 as well. Produced by Maelle Arnaud. Also made by the Institute Lumière in Lyon. A continuation of the series that began with Lumière ! L’aventure commence 10 years ago. This initially premiered at the 2024 San Sebastian Film Festival, and also played at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival last year. Janus Films debuts Frémaux’s Lumière, Le Cinéma in select US theaters starting March 25th, 2026 coming up. It will also debut on the Criterion Channel starting May 1st. Who wants to watch?
