Yes, you read that headline right. The ambient drone from supermarket freezers is the UK’s latest music sensation. In recent weeks, the frozen food section hum at the Sheffield co-op on Ecclesall Road went viral.
A Redditor first posted about it in January, and clips have been circulating on Reddit, X, and TikTok. Even BBC went to the freezers to investigate the situation and talk to shoppers about it. Some dismissed it, but one shopper said he was visiting after seeing about it on social media. “I’d say it almost feels quite choral. You feel like you’re in a cathedral listening to a choir of voices,” he said. I would have to agree.
Someone made a 4.5 hour loop of the drone, and someone else made a 10.5 hour loop. Incidentally, the Nottingham label KIKS/GFR released an album of fridge field recordings in 2018. Music is everywhere.
