Keri Russell Gives Major 'The Diplomat' Season 4 Update [Exclusive]

Keri Russell pulled off a surprise win at the Actor Awards, earning the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series award for her role as Kate Wyler on the Netflix political thriller The Diplomat. Last year, that series left audiences dangling on a big third-season cliffhanger, and while Russell couldn’t say anything about how that’ll be resolved, she was able to tease season 4 to Collider’s Taylor Gates.

Season 4 of The Diplomat is in the works, with Russell already lavishing praise on the work of series creator and writer Debora Cahn. She told Collider:

“Oh my gosh, it just gets better and better! Debora Cahn, I have to say, and you know, I couldn’t say anything when I won the award because I was just so flabbergasted, because I didn’t think I would win, I always lose, so I just didn’t prepare anything. Her writing is so good and still so surprising. I love reading every script, and it just feels a little bit like freedom. It’s so fun to do, and it’s just more of the same. Like, it’s complicated, and she’s strong and embarrassing and smart and funny. It’s just like all the things we want and it’s still good. It’s like the fourth season, and it’s still good.”

The Diplomat was renewed for a fourth season late last year, after the release of its third season; no release date has yet been announced.

What Happened in Season 3 of ‘The Diplomat’?

The first two seasons of The Diplomat featured US Ambassador to the United Kingdom Kate Wyler (Russell) and her fellow diplomat and husband Hal (Rufus Sewell), dealing with the aftermath of a mysterious attack on a Royal Navy ship, which they eventually determined was a false flag operation engineered by Machiavellian US Vice President Grace Penn (Allison Janney). Unfortunately, that information proved so shocking to President Bill Rayburn (Michael McKean) that he keeled over and died, leaving her the new President. Season 3 saw her choose Hal as her new Vice President, leaving Kate feeling left out and, seemingly, putting an end to the Wyler’s marriage. It also saw the US covertly recover a Russian superweapon from a downed sub…which Kate realizes, in the season’s final moments, was spearheaded by Grace and Hal.

This was Russell’s third Actor Award nomination and first win. She has also been nominated for five Emmys (three for The Americans and two for The Diplomat) without racking up a win. She’s been somewhat luckier at the Golden Globes, winning her first award back in 1998 for Felicity, but has yet to win since.
