Jason Statham Nearly Died Filming His 126-Minute High-Octane Thrill Ride

Jason Statham has had a rocky start to the year with his latest action vehicle bombing at the box office, but he’s had a successful enough career that it won’t be any more than a minor bump in the road. Statham has become one of the biggest action stars in the world, and he’s done it without starring in major franchises like Marvel and Star Wars. The biggest franchise that he’s involved in is Fast & Furious, and while he does have several credits in the blockbuster franchise, he doesn’t stand on the same ground as other veterans like Vin Diesel. Statham is a frequent collaborator with Sylvester Stallone, and while the two have worked together behind the scenes more than on screen, there is one franchise where their star power has been effectively utilized together.

12 years ago, Statham played Lee Christmas for the first time in The Expendables 3, the gun fu action thriller following a team of high-level operatives who go on a personal revenge mission. In addition to Statham and Stallone, the film also stars Jet Li, Harrison Ford, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, and more, and it was written by Stallone and directed by Patrick Hughes. The Expendables 3 is streaming on MovieSphere by Lionsgate in America, but globally, the film has become one of the most popular VOD purchases in several countries. Statham nearly died while filming The Expendables 3 when he was driving a truck while doing his own stunt. The brakes on the truck gave out, which forced him to drive into the Black Sea more than 50 feet deep before he was able to escape. He credits his physical condition for helping him get out of the situation alive.

Jason Statham Has a Lot of Irons in the Fire

Jason Statham’s new action movie, Shelter, is poised to wrap up its theatrical run after its first few weeks in theaters. Next up for Statham is Mutiny, another new action thriller that’s coming to theaters this August. He will kick off the year in 2027 with The Beekeeper 2, the long-awaited sequel to his 2024 action hit. He’s also been tapped to star in a new blockbuster from David Leitch, Jason Statham Stole My Bike. As one may expect, Statham will play himself in the film.

Be sure to check out The Expendables 3 on MovieSphere or on VOD platforms like Prime Video in America, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
