Liam Neeson’s Gripping New Sci-Fi Is His Highest-Rated Movie of the Decade

Liam Neeson‘s very particular set of acting skills has seen him tackle almost every genre. From an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in Schindler’s List to his gritty, leading-man work in countless action titles, Neeson has pretty much done it all. Last year, Neeson delivered two new projects with wildly different receptions, with the action sequel Ice Road: Vengeance receiving plenty of backlash and the laugh-a-minute comedy The Naked Gun becoming an instant hit with critics.

Next in line for Neeson is a foray into the horror comedy sub-genre, as he stars alongside Stranger Things favorite Joe Keery in an adaptation of David Koepp‘s 2019 novel Cold Storage, with the writer previously saying the movie was “scary, funny, exhilarating, surprising, and riotously entertaining.” Having been first announced in late 2022, the wait for Cold Storage has felt long for most, with a lack of updates coming fans’ way. However, on January 29, the film finally made its theatrical debut in Mexico and Brazil ahead of its February 13 premiere in the U.S.

Following this release, first reviews are now trickling in for Cold Storage, and the movie, thus far, is an undeniable hit. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film has earned a huge 90% score from critics at the time of writing. Not only does this mark the movie as one to watch for many U.S. theatergoers, but it is also the highest critics’ score for any Neeson movie this decade, including last year’s huge hit The Naked Gun (87%). Of course, when the film finally lands in the U.S., this score is subject to change.

What Are Critics Saying About ‘Cold Storage’?

Among the ten reviews that make up the 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes, almost all are full of praise. “To its credit, this is a movie that knows better than to take itself too seriously,” wrote one critic, with another saying, “It’s silly, fun, and gross in the best possible way. While it doesn’t redefine the genre, it settles in comfortably and has a blast with the material presented.” A synopsis of the movie reads:

“The film follows Travis and Naomi, two employees at a self-storage facility built atop a former military base, whose night shift transforms into a nightmare when a government-sealed parasitic fungus escapes from the underground levels. As temperatures rise, the microorganism unleashes its brain-controlling, body-bursting mayhem on anything in its path. The duo must join forces with a weathered bioterror operative to contain the threat before it triggers humanity’s extinction.”
