A little over a decade ago, star Leonardo DiCaprio embarked upon an unprecedented streak of box office success, and he did this without participating in IP-driven franchise movies. The streak began with Inception and continued with hits such as The Great Gatsby, Django Unchained, The Wolf of Wall Street, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It was during this period that DiCaprio finally won his first acting Oscar, for his performance in the epic Western film The Revenant, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Also starring Tom Hardy, who received an Oscar nomination for his performance, the movie is heading to the Peacock streaming service this February.
In addition to being a critical darling — The Revenant scored 12 nods at the Academy Awards — it was a massive hit at the box office. The movie grossed over $530 million globally, against a reported budget of $135 million. Iñárritu made history by winning his second successive Best Director Oscar, only a year after he’d won for Birdman. The movie follows a frontiersman who goes on a quest for vengeance against the man who betrayed him. The Revenant also featured Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter in supporting roles. The film is now sitting at a “Certified Fresh” 78% score on the aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “As starkly beautiful as it is harshly uncompromising, The Revenant uses Leonardo DiCaprio’s committed performance as fuel for an absorbing drama that offers punishing challenges – and rich rewards.”
Tom Hardy’s Last Film Was ‘Havoc’
DiCaprio is in contention for another Oscar this year, for his performance in Paul Thomas Anderson‘s screwball action comedy One Battle After Another, which earned widespread acclaim and scored 13 nominations. Meanwhile, Iñárritu is gearing up to release his highly-anticipated new film, Digger, marking star Tom Cruise‘s first non-franchise movie in a decade. Hardy, on the other hand, will star in the second season of the hit Paramount+ crime drama series MobLand, executive produced by Guy Ritchie. He most recently headlined the action film Havoc, which was released on Netflix to mixed reviews last year.
