Glenrothan Trailer

“We all make mistakes, Dad. It’s how we handle it that counts…” Lionsgate UK has revealed the first official trailer for the film titled Glenrothan, the feature directorial debut of Scottish actor Brian Cox. This first premiered at TIFF last year and also played at the Rome Film Festival. Legendary actor Brian Cox makes his indelible directorial debut with this tense drama about family and forgiveness, featuring fellow actors Alan Cumming & Shirley Henderson (and Cox also co-stars in it). Two brothers following a violent exchange with their father on the day of their mother’s funeral, the younger of the two left their Highland home for America. After 40 years they reunite in the land of their birth. The cast also includes Alexandra Shipp and Siobhan Redmond. TIFF adds that the film “digs deep into the complexities of familial ties and fissures, set against the proud but threatened tradition of making some of the world’s finest whisky. [This] offers Cumming one of his richest onscreen roles, facing off against Cox who, behind or before the camera, infuses every scene with a sense of fraught history and stubborn hope.” Well, now I would like to try their whiskey.

Intro via TIFF: “Featuring a powerhouse cast that includes Alan Cumming, Shirley Henderson, and Cox himself, Glenrothan explores the challenges of tradition, commitment, and change. After 35 years in the United States, Donal (Cumming) returns to his family-owned whisky distillery in the Scottish Highlands. When he left, his dear mother had died and, on the very day of her funeral, he and his brother Sandy (Cox) wound up in a violent exchange with their father. All those years away provided Donal with the chance to become the version of himself that his chaotic family would never allow, but the wounds from that terrible time have never fully healed. Now, with the survival of their treasured family business on the line, Donal hopes to make amends with Sandy — and find some desperately needed inner peace — before it’s too late.

Glenrothan is directed by award-winning Scottish actor / producer / filmmaker Brian Cox, now making his directorial debut following directing one ep of the series “Oz” in 2000. The screenplay is written by David Ashton and Jeff Murphy. Produced by Nicholas Crum, Phin Glynn, Neil Zeiger, Vladimir Zemtsov, Crystine Zhang. This initially premiered at the 2025 Toronto Film Festival last year. Lionsgate UK will debut Cox’s Glenrothan film in UK cinemas starting April 17th, 2026 this spring. No US release is set yet – stay tuned.
