Spencer Thomas Says ‘The World Is Fucked and I Love You’ in New Song

“The World Is Fucked and I Love You,” in all its Eighties synth glory, announces the Mississippi songwriter’s new album, Cynical Vision

Spencer Thomas sets the phrase that many of us have been repeating these days to glorious Eighties synth sounds in his new single, “The World Is Fucked and I Love You.”

Over a drum machine beat programmed by co-producer Nate Nelson and a one-man-band orchestra of acoustic guitar, bass, and synth played by Thomas, the Mississippi artist frets about pollution and landfills, slanted news and rebuked science, and the fear that WWIII is right around the corner. But even if all those calamities come to pass, hey, Thomas still loves his partner.

“While ‘The World Is Fucked and I Love You’ rings true in 2025, I wrote it back in 2021. I guess the ever present pandemic and increasingly unusual weather patterns was a bad combination with living alone and ingesting a lot of news. I remember hearing about our trash being dumped in landfills in other countries. I remember thinking about our increasing political unrest,” Thomas says in a statement. “I remember thinking the only reason that we’re still able to survive is the love of other people. How it’s important to tell other people we love them while this uncertainty looms in the background.”

Thomas says he took inspiration for the song from “Trouble Waiting to Happen,” a track off Warren Zevon’s 1987 album Sentimental Hygiene. “The 80s synth flair with current events created a palette that I’ve never explored before and I just wanted people to resonate with the ‘doom & gloom,’ but also love through it, as well. Let’s recognize the fear we keep shoving out of the way, express love for each other and move forward,” he says.

A multi-instrumentalist and former member of Futurebirds, Thomas dropped a music video for “The World Is Fucked and I Love You” directed by Cody Rogers. The song also announces his forthcoming album Cynical Vision, produced by Thomas and Nate Nelson at Tweed Recording in Athens, Georgia, and due March 20 via New West Records.
