Lara Croft is officially back in action. Amazon MGM Studios has announced that production is now underway on Tomb Raider, its upcoming Prime Video series based on the iconic video game franchise, and celebrated the milestone with a first-look image of Sophie Turner as the legendary adventurer in her iconic, classic gear.
Alongside Turner, Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed several key cast roles that had been the subject of heavy speculation. Jason Isaacs will play Atlas DeMornay, Lara’s uncle, while Sigourney Weaver stars as Evelyn Wallis, a powerful and mysterious figure. Additional cast members include Martin Bobb-Semple as Zip, Lara’s trusted tech support and closest ally; Bill Patersonas Winston, the Croft family’s longtime butler; Jack Bannon as Gerry, Lara’s pilot and resident snack enthusiast; and John Heffernan as David, an overworked government official pulled into Lara’s orbit.
Also joining the series are Celia Imrie as Francine, a champagne-sipping British Museum executive; Paterson Joseph as senior government fixer Thomas Warner; Sasha Luss as Sasha, a fierce new rival; Juliette Motamed as Georgia, a rule-following museum curator; and August Wittgenstein as Lukas, an illegal raider with a complicated past connected to Lara.
What Previous Tomb Raider Projects Have Been Released?
The Tomb Raider franchise has seen multiple incarnations across film, animation, and television since Lara Croft debuted in video games in 1996. The character first made the leap to live action with Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001), starring Angelina Jolie as the iconic adventurer, followed by Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life (2003). The films were financially successful but not overly well received by critics. The films are also notable for their supporting casts featuring big names early in their careers. The 2001 film starred Jon Voight as Lara’s father Lord Richard Croft, Iain Glen as the villain Manfred Powell, Daniel Craig as rival adventurer Alex West, and Noah Taylor as tech expert Bryce. Cradle of Life featured Gerard Butler as mercenary Terry Sheridan, Ciarán Hinds as antagonist Jonathan Reiss, Djimon Hounsou as Kosa, and Til Schweiger as Sean.
The franchise was later rebooted with Tomb Raider (2018), starring Alicia Vikander, which took a more grounded, survival-focused approach inspired by the modern video game trilogy. The movie also starred Dominic West as Richard Croft, Walton Goggins as Trinity operative Mathias Vogel, Daniel Wu as ship captain Lu Ren, Kristin Scott Thomas as Ana Miller, Nick Frost as Alan, and Hannah John-Kamen as Sophie.
