A new featherweight contender has entered the ring for Nikon full frame cameras: the versatile NIKKOR Z 24-105mm f/4-7.1 4.4x zoom.
I’ve always found 24-105mm to be an extremely efficient focal range. Generally, for professional work, my workhorse is the 24-70mm f/2.8. 24-105mm lenses tend to trade a bit of light for the added range, but can often help you move faster when shooting in exchange. With the new 24-105mm, Nikon is trying to address two problems at once. On one hand, they are offering added range for FX shooters. On the other hand, they are offering that range in an extremely light package. The 24-105mm f/4-7.1 weighs just 350 grams.
Now, it’s important to note that the lighter weight comes at the expense of a constant aperture. So, the variable-aperture aspect of the lens (max aperture changes depending on zoom range) is something to keep in mind depending on your individual needs. But if you can live with that drawback, this should make for a nice mobile package with a lot of range.
The minimum focus distance of the lens is 7.9 inches at the wide end and 11 inches at the long end.
It uses a quiet STM stepping motor.
For those using the lens for video applications, the zoom capability can be expanded to the equivalent of 210mm by engaging the Nikon camera’s Hi-Res Zoom functionality.
Like most recent Nikon lenses, the 24-105mm has a customizable control ring that you can set to things like focus, aperture, exposure compensation, or ISO, if desired.
The lens will be available late January 2026 and retails for $549.95. The lens will also be available as part of a kit with the Nikon Z5II for $2,199.95.
