Florida rapper Doechii spent years as a word-of-mouth cult favorite, and she finally ascended to crossover-star status about a year ago. Today, she shares her first new single since her Gotye-sampling mixtape track “Anxiety” got a proper release and became a top-10 hit earlier this year. Doechii’s new song “girl, get up.” is a collaboration with another big star, Doechii’s TDE labelmate and past collaborator SZA. There’s at least some chance that this song will get very, very big.
Three years ago, SZA appeared on Doechii’s single “Persuasive.” Last year, SZA joined Doechii at her Camp Flog Gnaw set. They’ve been teasing a reunion for a little while, and now they’re back together on “girl, get up.” It’s a woozy, moody track, and Doechii posted it on social media with the phrase “life update.” She uses the song to crow about her sudden success, to tease her upcoming album, and to dismiss the talk that she’s an “industry plant”: “Y’all can’t fathom that I work this hard/ And y’all can’t fathom that I earned this chart/ Y’all can’t stand my vibe ’cause I’m anointed/ All y’all evil-ass hoes just annoying.”
Jay Versace produced “girl, get up.,” and it samples the Neptunes’ drums from Birdman and Clipse’s “What Happened To That Boy?” The beat is a smoky undulation, and Doechii and SZA’s understated deliveries match its tone. According to a press release, this is the final song in Doechii’s Swamp Sessions series. In the slow, minimal James Mackel-directed video, Doechii dances on a yacht and on a stadium rooftop.
