11 Years Later, Jason Momoa’s Easy-To-Binge ‘Dark Winds’ Replacement Surges on Streaming Charts

Jason Momoa is gearing up to begin his first press tour for his new role as Lobo in the DCU, but during his Aquaman era, he starred in a gripping two-season series that’s dominating streaming years after it went off the air. Back in 2014 and 2015, Momoa starred alongside Julianne Nicholson (Paradise) in The Red Road, the psychological thriller series following a local policeman who tries to cope with problems in his family by throwing himself into his work. The Red Road is streaming on Netflix in America, where it has become one of the top 10 most popular shows on the platform over the holidays.

The first season of The Red Road landed with a solid 67% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which came from 27 reviews. It also earned a respectable 80% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, which fell well below the 92% earned by Season 2. The follow-up season, which was released only one year after the first, did not earn enough reviews to be given a critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show has drawn comparisons to Dark Winds, with elements of investigative police procedurals being heavily present in both shows alongside deep connections to Native American communities.

Jason Momoa first rose to prominence with his performance as Khal Drogo in the first season of Game of Thrones, but he broke out a few years later alongside the first season of The Red Road with Road to Paloma, an action thriller that he starred in and also wrote and directed. He later blew up in 2018 thanks to his role as Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s DCEU, and he reprised the role for the final time in 2023’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Earlier this year, he starred in A Minecraft Movie opposite Jack Black.

What Else Is Streaming on Netflix Right Now?

The most popular show on Netflix right now is the fifth and final season of Stranger Things, which has released seven of eight episodes, with the series finale coming on New Year’s Eve. The most popular movie on Netflix right now is Wrath of Man, the 2021 heist thriller starring Jason Statham and directed by Guy Ritchie. It beat out Wake Up Dead Man, the third installment in the Knives Out franchise, to reach the #1 spot. Into the Spider-Verse is also blowing up the Netflix top 10 right now.

Check out both seasons of The Red Road on Netflix and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
