One of the Best Original Action Movies of the 21st Century Races Toward a New Streaming Home

Director Edgar Wright has had quite a disappointing run at the box office lately, with his last two movies bombing hard despite mostly positive reviews. His latest film, the Stephen King adaptation The Running Man, grossed just around $70 million at the worldwide box office, against a reported budget of $110 million. The one before that, the psychological horror Last Night in Soho, made just a little over $20 million against a reported budget of $43 million. However, his 2017 action film Baby Driver remains his biggest hit. Hailed as a welcome creative move for Wright after he unceremoniously quit Marvel’s Ant-Man at the last moment, the movie is widely regarded as one of the greatest action hits of the decade. Its legacy is somewhat tarnished, however, by the involvement of two stars who’ve been canceled to varying degrees — Ansel Elgort and Kevin Spacey. Baby Driver was recently available on Netflix, and will race onto the Paramount+ streaming service at the end of the month.

Released in 2017, the film grossed nearly $240 million at the global box office, against a reported budget of around $35 million. Baby Driver is now sitting at a “certified fresh” 92% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Stylish, exciting, and fueled by a killer soundtrack, Baby Driver hits the road and it’s gone — proving fast-paced action movies can be smartly written without sacrificing thrills.” The movie was praised for its action sequences, which were edited to the rhythm of pop music. It followed the adventures of a getaway driver who gets involved in all sorts of trouble with gangsters. The movie also featured Lily James, Eiza González, Jon Hamm, Jon Bernthal, and Jamie Foxx.

Edgar Wright’s Latest Film Recently Hit Home Video

Elgort went on to star in Steven Spielberg‘s West Side Story, and then headlined HBO Max’s Tokyo Vice series, whose pilot was directed by Michael Mann. James was coming off of a titular role in Kenneth Branagh‘s blockbuster live-action Cinderella, which made more than $500 million worldwide. She went on to star in Danny Boyle‘s high-concept rom-com Yesterday.

Wright’s The Running Man debuted on the PVOD market recently after a disappointing box office run; you can check the movie out at home, and wait for Baby Driver to hit Paramount+ next month. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
